From Cult Conversation to Job-Site Bible Study
MEXICO — A small construction crew sat in the backyard of Crossworld worker Andrew’s house, waiting for more supplies to finish their job. Andrew was about to go check on them when the doorbell rang and he walked toward the front door instead.
At the door stood two men whom Andrew immediately identified as part of a local cult. He had encountered this group several times and took each opportunity to engage with them about their beliefs. This conversation, though short, still gave Andrew the chance to point the men to Scripture for God’s truth.
I wonder if the construction workers heard any of that, Andrew thought as he closed the door when the men left. He walked through the house to check on the workers in the backyard.
“I apologize for the visitors,” Andrew said to the crew.
“I never know how to respond to them, but I heard what you said,” said one man. “You teach the Bible at the seminary, right?”
“That’s right,” said Andrew. “Do you know much about the Bible?”
“We can only go to mass once or twice a year when we’re not working,” said another man. “But some of the Scriptures you shared with them about the Trinity sounded familiar. Would you read the Bible with us while we wait for our supplies?”
“Of course!” Andrew said. He went back inside to grab a couple of Bibles.
“Let’s read from Colossians 1,” Andrew said when they had sat down.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth….
Together they discussed the priority of Jesus — that he is God and that he died for them. The whole crew participated in the conversation until their supplies showed up and it was time to get back to work.
Before they walked away, Andrew gave the men the Bibles so they could read on their own and prayed they would continue to want to learn about Jesus.
