Unjustly Jailed!

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO — Kezia was accustomed to the injustice her country knows as everyday life — especially along the trans-Africa highway where looting and rape are commonplace. So she wasn’t surprised when her son was unjustly imprisoned. But she was going to make it right.

Just before going to the police station, Kezia called on her church-based transformation group for help. They had been meeting around God’s Word and in prayer to walk with each other through African plagues of poverty, conflict, HIV/AIDS and discouragement. And now, when she needed them most, she knew they would stand beside her and fight for justice together.

“I’d like my son to be released,” Kezia told the officer at the station.

The officer looked around at the group with her. “Who are the rest of these people? Family?”

“They aren’t relatives, but they are in my church transformation group,” Kezia said. “My problem is their problem. They have come to hear why my son has been imprisoned and to resolve the issue.”

The officer had never heard of such solidarity among non-family members. “Let me see what I can do,” he said.

He came back some time later and called for Kezia.

“Your son is innocent,” the officer said. “Usually we would require a fee to release someone, regardless of what they have or haven’t done. But I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen today, so I will not require any payment to release your son.”

The officer started to leave, then turned back. “Can you tell me more about these transformation groups?”
