Six Years of Silence
CANADA — When 30-year-old Peter walked into the Outreach House where Crossworld worker Ray was working, he looked a bit older than the usual crowd. Every week, international university students gathered to laugh, talk, study the Bible, practice their English and, of course, eat.
“How did you hear about this place?” Ray asked.
“I saw the sign out front inviting students to come in for a free meal. I’m not a student, but I hope that you’ll accept me anyway. I’m actually a business professional and I work close by.”
As the two men talked, Ray realized that though Peter was personable, successful and smart, he was missing something in his life — Jesus. Ray saw a few Bible college students, including Stephen and Melanie, sitting nearby. He motioned to Stephen and said, “Why don’t you come over here and sit with us? You’re a Christian. Why not explain to Peter what it means for you to know the Lord?”
Stephen fidgeted and shifted his eyes, but he sat down anyway and gave his testimony. Ray moved to another group to chat, but prayed for their conversation.
The next day, Ray saw Stephen in the university cafeteria line. “Thanks so much for inviting me over to talk with Peter,” Stephen said. “I had a great time explaining my faith.”
As they sat down to eat their lunch, Melanie joined them. “Wow, Stephen, I’m so happy that you talked with Peter yesterday! He was my high school ethics teacher and I haven’t seen or talked to him in six years. When I was in high school, I told him that I was a believer in Christ, but I was unable to continue the discussion with him. Now, years later, the discussion continues!”
Later, Peter wrote to Ray and said, “Thanks so much for making me feel welcome. I enjoyed talking with Stephen.”
As the circle of disciples making disciples continues, pray that Peter will meet Jesus.
