Secrets Exposed
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO — Mani had a secret.
Every week, Mani took his mother to her church-based support group meetings on the back of his motorcycle, but he never stayed for the meeting because he didn’t want his secret exposed.
For the past year, Mani had been following directions from the local witch doctor so that the business he shared with his older sister, Diba, would prosper. Diba convinced him that nothing else could guarantee business success. So, every day, Mani blew on the horn of a cow, gathered and sprinkled water — all to appease the evil spirits.
One day as Mani zoomed up on his motorcycle to his mother’s support group, the members invited him to stay. “We’ve been praying for you!” they said. “We know that you and Diba have been following the witch doctor’s orders to make your business grow.”
Mani sat back, astonished. That had been a secret! “God must have revealed those things to you. That’s the only way you could have known!” He decided right there to submit his life to God.
That night, after Mani had a vision of a person dressed in white, he further knew he needed to change his lifestyle. The next time he saw Diba, he told her, “I can’t work in the business with you anymore now that I have dedicated my life to Christ. I won’t keep trying to please these demons!”
To Mani’s surprise, Diba didn’t fight his decision. As they talked, they walked to their business and opened the door to find that a fire had burned everything on the shelves! But it hadn’t touched the ceiling, as a natural fire would have. Diba then knew that she, too, needed to stop appeasing the evil spirits.
Today, Mani has found a different job with a boss who respects him, and he has joined a church-based support group. Rejoice with us for the God who works in ways beyond our understanding!
