Rowdy Shepherds
GERMANY — Christmastime neared; in the small village, the undercurrent of excitement filled the atmosphere. Children walking to school in the morning passed delicate white lights in the streets and a large advent wreath around the fountain downtown.
When Crossworld worker Cindy taught her room full of first-grade “shepherds” about the Christmas story in Luke 2, the children loved acting surprised and terrified as the angel proclaimed, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12, New American Standard Bible).
The children pretended to be shepherds traveling to Bethlehem to see the special baby, Jesus. As Cindy led them around the room, the children’s joyful shouts and rowdy antics grew louder and louder. Cindy started to quiet the group down — but then she thought, This might be exactly what it was like for those shepherds as they traveled to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus. They had just received the best news ever!
So, instead of hushing the children, Cindy let their infectious joy spill out as the class walked toward Bethlehem and Jesus.
