Quizzing for Truth
ECUADOR — “Mom, can you help me with my quizzing questions?” Josephine asked.
“Sure, what’s the topic this year?” Anita replied.
“The gospel and answering other religions.”
For the past two years, Josephine has participated in a Bible quiz competition with her youth group and their leader, Crossworld worker Dave. The teens memorize answers to 100 questions on topics like doctrine and Christian living, then compete against other youth groups in the area.
“Is the Virgin Mary a co-redeemer with Christ?” Anita asked, feeding Josephine a quiz question.
Josephine quoted Luke 1:46-48: “And Mary said, ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant.’ Next.”
“Can the saints intercede for us?”
This time Josephine quoted from 1 Timothy 2:5. “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
There was silence for a moment while Anita re-read the previous verses. In their Catholic-influenced culture, few people consider the implications of these truths. She moved on to the next question, but for the rest of the night, Josephine watched her mother look over the quizzing sheet and mouth verses to herself.
As Josephine was getting ready for bed, Anita suddenly said, “This all makes sense! These dead saints can’t do anything to help me. They were just human like me. So why should I pray to them? From now on, I’m only praying to God!”
Josephine went on to help her team win the quizzing competition, but the greater victory had already been won when Anita encountered the truth of Jesus as our only mediator.

Your part in this story...
Crossworld worker Dave asks you to pray for these requests.
- Anita is not far from trusting Jesus, the only mediator between God and man. Pray that she will receive Christ as her Savior.
- Pray for the people of Ecuador. They are familiar with the stories of the Bible, but many lack a personal, transformative encounter with Jesus.
- Pray for Josephine as she recently began her studies at a nearby Bible institute.
