“I Have Never Heard of Jesus”
ASIA — The honking never stopped as the taxi braked and then jerked forward, revving toward any opening in the commercial district’s thick traffic. Smog diffused the sunlight, but not the stifling heat. Rickshaws piled high with people and packages dashed among scooters and trucks.
Riding in this taxi, Mike, a Crossworld worker, asked the driver about his dashboard display of gods. “Oh,” the driver said, pointing, “that one is to protect me. That one is to give me money, but he is no good. That one is for family safety…” and so on.
“Have you ever heard of Jesus?” Mike asked.
The driver thought for a few seconds. “No. I have never heard of Jesus. Who is he?”
Mike paused to steady his voice and expression from betraying his incredulity. How could it be that in one of the world’s largest cities, the name of God’s Son remained unknown?
“Jesus Christ — His name is familiar to millions of people, but you’ve never heard it? Not even once?”
“Never,” the driver insisted. “What kind of god is Jesus? What does he do?”
