Bigger Than Fear
EAST ASIA — Sammy set a plate of falafel down on Crossworld worker Drew’s table and beamed at him.
“Guess what!” Sammy asked. Without waiting, he continued. “I called your friend last night after work, the one who speaks my language, and we spoke for hours and hours. We talked until the morning, and now, I follow Jesus!”
“What about your fear?” asked Drew. “I know how you’re afraid to read the Bible — you won’t even download a copy onto your phone because you’re worried the government might be watching.”
Sammy shook his head. “I’m still afraid,” he said, “but a friend challenged me. She said, ‘Do you believe or not? If you believe, then you have nothing to be afraid of!’ Well, I believe! So I want to be baptized.”
Drew rejoiced at the change in his friend. Sammy was baptized at the beach as the community of believers witnessed his public declaration to follow Jesus. He also found the courage to leave an abusive work situation for a new job.
Fear doesn’t rule Sammy’s life anymore — Jesus does! Pray that he keeps following the God who is bigger than his fears.
