Are You Surprised By What This Man Believes?

It’s simply astounding what some people believe! Take Santa Claus for example. Roughly 4 percent of American adults still believe in the jolly old man from the North Pole. Then there are those who refuse to believe well-established facts — like the 6 percent of Americans and 28 percent of Russians who believe that Neil Armstrong never walked on the moon.

It shouldn’t be surprising then, that a man like Sahil (read Sahil’s story), who was raised from childhood to eat only vegetables, could believe that meat-eating is the cause of the evil in the world. How does one even begin to answer such a claim? I don’t know about you, but when I read Charlie’s response to Sahil’s sincerely held point of view, I was impressed. It was a great reminder to me of two important truths.

First, the Holy Spirit is a limitless source of knowledge and wisdom that we desperately need to tap into. I’m convinced that Charlie’s reply to his friend was actually inspired by God. Jesus said that when His followers find themselves answering to kings and rulers for their faith, they don’t need to worry because the Holy Spirit will give them wisdom with which to respond. I think He did that for Charlie.

Second, it’s not my job to be an expert on every wind of human opinion. My job is to be thoroughly familiar with what God says and bring His truth to bear on the tough questions of life. I don’t have to do the heavy lifting of convincing people. God’s Word and God’s Spirit are more than capable of doing that. I just need to put it out there, where people like Sahil do life.
